The ESL Program offers non-credit courses to English language learners focusing on the development of their speaking, writing, reading, and listening literacy skills. Students will receive a Certificate of Achievement at the end of each class.
Courses are offered over a four-week period and meet for 2-3 hours, twice per week. Students will receive a total of 20 hours of classroom instruction per course.

Students interested in the ESL Program must possess their own base access. UMGC cannot provide base passes to students participating in the ESL Program.
How to Enroll
Interested in taking ESL classes? Please contact your local UMGC representative for registration information or email email@example.com. Registration must be completed prior to the first class meeting.
Each course is $150. Tuition includes a textbook and self-study DVD-ROM for the duration of the course.*
* UMGC will collect all course materials on the last day of class.
- ESL 1101: Beginning ESL
This is a basic conversational English course targeting listening, reading, speaking, and some writing in English. Topics include social situations such as greetings, body language, cultural differences, and asking questions both formally and informally.
- ESL 1102: Intermediate ESL
This is a basic academic English course targeting listening, reading, speaking, and some writing that can be utilized in class discussions. Topics include nationalities, occupations, diet and health, sports and leisure, weather, and technology.
- ESL 1103: Advanced ESL
In this course, students will be developing their English skills to be utilized in professional environments including business dialogue in speaking and writing. Topics and vocabulary introduced will cover various workplace situations such as telephone etiquette, describing upbringing, office terminology, modern transportation, expressions for emergencies, giving/asking for directions and others.
- ESL 1201: Business and Professional Communications
This is a basic business and professional English course targeting listening, reading, speaking, and writing in a professional business setting. Topics and vocabulary include various workplace situations such as banking and money transactions, office terminology, modern transportation, expressions for emergencies, education, and others.
- ESL 1202: Business & Professional Communications II
In this course, students will develop their English skills to be utilized in professional environments, including business dialogue and business writing. Topics and vocabulary introduced will cover various business situations such as making appointments and suggestions, hotel customer service, giving advice and describing locations.
- ESL 1203: Business & Professional Communications III
In this course, students will develop their English skills to be utilized in professional environments, including business dialogue and business writing. Topics and vocabulary introduced will cover various business situations such as: entertaining in the business world, balancing work and leisure, and future workplaces.
- ESL 1301: TOEFL® Prep*
• Gain a broad understanding of the four sections of the TOEFL® test: Reading, Listening, Speaking and Writing
• Acquire helpful tips to prepare you for the TOEFL® test
• Register and take the TOEFL® with UMGC
