NANAKO HOCH

Prof. Hoch holds a M.S.Ed. in language education from Indiana University and a B.A. from University of Maryland. Her academic career also includes undergraduate studies in linguistics at Sophia University and graduate studies in language education at University of Maryland College Park. She comes from a family of educators and received teacher certification in foreign language education from Kanagawa Prefecture and the State of Maryland. She has taught students of various ages and backgrounds for over 20 years. Prior to teaching at UMUC, she taught at Saint Joseph’s University in Philadelphia and Harrisburg Area Community College among other schools. She has over 20 years of experience in international trade, translation and interpretation in commercial, legal and medical fields as well as cultural settings including 2002 FIFA World Cup Korea/Japan and Maryland-Kanagawa Sister States events. Her recent translation work includes articles in Phila-Nipponica: An Historic Guide to Philadelphia & Japan.
JAIME HOPKINS

Dr.Hopkins received her B.S. in Psychology from Mount Saint Mary’s University in 2000, and her Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from Nova Southeastern University in 2005. She completed the majority of her graduate training in Clinical Child Psychology at the University of Miami School of Medicine, with a focus on early intervention. She has practiced as a Clinical Child Psychologist since becoming licensed in 2006 and worked for the Navy in Japan previously for the Educational and Developmental Intervention Services (EDIS) program. She currently serves as a Clinical Preceptor for the Substance Abuse Rehabilitation Program (SARP) at Yokosuka Naval Hospital, Japan, where she provides clinical supervision and training to Active Duty counselors. She joined UMUC Asia in 2016.

Damien Horigan

Prof. Damien Horigan holds a total of four academic degrees namely, a bachelor’s degree from the University of Hawaii at Hilo, a master’s degree from the University of New Brunswick, a juris doctor degree from the William S. Richardson School of Law, University of Hawaii at Manoa, and a legum magister degree from the Faculty of Law, National University of Singapore.

Prof. Horigan is licensed as an attorney-at-law in his home state. In addition, he is a member of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators.

During his career so far, Prof. Horigan has served in a wide variety of positions in the United States, Asia, and the Greater Middle East. Before moving to Japan in 2015 to teach full-time for UMUC, he worked in Afghanistan for a project supported by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). He also served as the chairman of a leading Afghan bank based in Kabul.

Finally, Prof. Horigan has written book chapters, journal articles, conference papers, working papers, magazine articles, and newspaper opinion pieces on a range of different topics. His current research focuses on international business law.

MARIKO HORIOKA

Prof. Horioka earned an M.A. in teaching Japanese as a second language from J.F. Oberlin University, Tokyo and a B.A. in arts from International Christian University, Tokyo. She has over 10 years of teaching experience in Japanese and has taught at universities and language schools in Japan, the United States and Taiwan. She previously taught at Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University, Oita. Her professional interests include Japanese pedagogy and second language acquisition. Ms. Horioka has taught at Camp Fuji since she joined UMUC in 2013.

Dr. Armand Hornia holds a BA in Biochemistry from the New York University (NYU), and a Ph.D. in Molecular Biology from Hunter College of the City University of New York (CUNY).

FRANKIE ISHIZAKI

Adjunct Associate Professor Frankie T. Ishizaki has taught criminal justice, homeland security and public safety administration courses for UMUC since 2002. He is a retired FBI special agent and has served as Chief of Police, Director of Corrections, Homeland Security Advisor and Senator in the 29th Guam Legislature. Frank has also worked as a police sergeant, crime scene investigator, youth corrections worker and security consultant. Frank has lectured on international terrorism and investigative techniques for the FBI and the State Department. He has taught criminal justice, homeland security, public administration and science courses at the secondary and post-secondary levels. Frank has written opinion columns for the Pacific Daily News and the Marianas Variety. He hosted radio talk shows for K57 and KUAM radio. Frank holds a B.A. in Chemistry from the University of Guam and a M.S. in Forensic Chemistry from the University of Pittsburgh.

Dr. Sarah E. Jackson holds a BA in economics from Western Washington University, and an MS and PhD from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. After completing her PhD in 2006,she taught at Indiana University of Pennsylvania in the US until accepting her first overseas position in 2012. From 2012 until 2015, she taught at The Petroleum Institute, a small engineering university in the UAE. She joined UMUC Asia in 2015 as a Traveling Collegiate Associate Professor were she has taught in mainland Japan and Okinawa.
